After successful testing of the IMCI Computerized Adaptation and Training Tool (ICATT) in a classroom setting in Tanzania and Peru, ICATT was tested for the first time in a two month distance learning course in two districts in East Java from27-29 June until 19 August 2009. The course consisted of 3 face to face facilitator-participant encounters for 1 day and two self-learning periods in between.
The first test IMCI distance learning course was successful and participants enjoyed working with ICATT. Forty participants were enrolled in the two districts. Two were replaced early in the course, thus 40 participants finished the course. Eighty two percent of participants have completed working through the ICATT. The number of times that the participants worked with ICATT and individually practised with patients in their health facilities during the course widely varied and was between 2 and 3 times a week in average. Participants have managed 28 patients in average (13 – 69). The results of a written post-test in both districts are comparable with other IMCI courses using ICATT conducted.
No problems in ICATT navigation were reported. Difficulties occurred at the very beginning of the course with running the ICATT Player from USB flash disk. These difficulties were associated with participants’ computers.
Main issues were related to the organization of clinical practice because the ICATT facilitator training conducted was designed for facilitators already trained in IMCI facilitation while the District facilitators had no previous training in facilitating IMCI courses.
The content of the 1st facilitator – participant encounter was found too demanding; therefore an additional encounter was suggested. The whole course duration (56-58 days) was found too long. The need for suggested revisions will be further explored during the next test DL ICATT course.
Recommendations for ICATT training in general will be made after an additional experience from second test distance learning course that started in Tanzania on 19 September will have been gained.
