ICATT timing test. Basel, Switzerland. 25-27 February 2008
07-Mar-2008

WHO and NFSD jointly conducted a timing test of the application before the release of ICATT version 1/2008. The results of this test allowed to make some estimations on the time needed in the field to conduct ICATT-based IMCI courses.

Six participants took part in the timing test. None of them received any formal IMCI training before the test. Four out of six participants had some medical training (from nurse to medical doctor) and two did not have any medical education background. Before the test there were two formal presentations – one on principles of Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) and the second one - on how to navigate in ICATT Training Player. After these two presentations the participants worked individually with Training Player.

Based on the results received during the test, it was estimated that it is possible to work through all key materials included in ICATT-based IMCI training course during approximately 18-20 hours. This included reading main technical information, seeing illustrative materials, doing all practice exercises and completing text examination at the end of each training unit. The estimated time did not take into account time required for clinical practice.
In addition to the time estimates the test participants provided very useful feedback on overall content of the tool and quality of the materials included in the training.

The results of the timing test will allow development of practical suggestions for agenda of ICATT-based IMCI training courses at country level.
