Joint team of WHO HQ CAH, PAHO and NFSD consultant visited Lima to assist in early application of ICATT in Peru. The main objectives of the visit were: to assist in the completion of the Spanish version of ICATT; to assist in the start of the Peruvian version of ICATT; to assist in planning of the first ICATT based IMCI training.

The English version of ICATT was finalized in May 2008. A pre-copy of this version was given during a previous mission in March 2008 to the IMCI Training Unit of the Children's Hospital to be translated into Spanish for use in the PAHO Region and to be adapted to the Peruvian situation. During the visit generic Spanish version was finalized and preparation of the ICATT library of Spanish language materials initiated. It is expected that by the end of September 2008 the generic Spanish version of ICATT will be available for use in the Spanish speaking countries of the region. This version, after the agreement of WHO CAH HQ, will be sent to PAHO for possible use in other countries in the American Region. In the meantime, PAHO will take the opportunity of a number of Regional Child Health meetings to disseminate information about ICATT and its potential for IMCI adaptation and training in the Region. In addition, PAHO will discuss the possibility to link ICATT to the current work on computer and internet-based training being done in PAHO by the Health Systems group.
During the visit the preparation of the Peruvian adaptation of ICATT generic materials was initiated. After its completion in September-October 2008 the first ICATT-based IMCI training courses will take place using various training methods. These ICATT-based training courses will be evaluated on their effectiveness, duration and cost and compared with the IMCI training currently conducted in Peru.
Also during the visit an ICATT working group under the leadership of the Director General (DG) of the "Salud de las Personas" with members from other Directorates of the MOH, WHO Peru, Universities and other Child Health partners was instituted and its core functions defined. This group will approve the Peruvian ICATT version to be used in training. At least two ICATT-based IMCI training courses in pre-service and in-service settings will be conducted before the end of 2008. After their evaluation a decision will be taken regarding future role and use of ICATT in Peru.
