The first ICATT-based IMCI training in Spanish. Lima, Peru. 11-20 December 2008.
03-Feb-2009

IMCI Global team supported first ICATT-base IMCI training for nursing students using Spanish version of the generic IMCI materials.

The main objectives of the course were:
  • To test the effectiveness of the use of ICATT materials for training of health workers in two modalities:
    • Individual use of computers in classroom settings
    • Use of ICATT materials through LCD projected teaching
  • To train Peruvian team to use ICATT Training Player effectively
  • To conduct ICATT-based IMCI clinical training course using Generic Spanish language materials.
  • To evaluate the use of ICATT in IMCI training and document the lessons learnt
Facilitators training for 12 national IMCI trainers took place in the National Child Health institute (Instituto National de Salud del Nino) from 11 to 13 of December 2008. The focus of the facilitators training was technical review of the all 25 ICATT training units, practice conducting exercises that require filling printed recording forms (completed recording forms will be used for checking the participants in the course) and feedback to the participants. During the three days of the training all facilitators have been asked to practice presenting ICATT textual content, summarizing the information on the screens, and practice conducting various group exercises. Five national observers attended facilitators training on behalf of Ministry of Health and PAHO country office.
From 15 to 20 December 2008 all newly trained ICATT trainers assisted in the training course which was conducted using two modalities:
Individual work with computers - 10 participants worked through ICATT materials using individual computer. For every day 2 local facilitators were present to help the participants and to manage clinical practice.
Projected training - For the group of 10 participants ICATT content was projected on the screen. For each training unit group worked with 2 local facilitators. Their task was to summarize key messages on the screen, to provide relevant explanations, to lead group exercises and conduct clinical practice.
Preliminary results of the course evaluation showed that both training methods used were successful and the evaluation has shown that the participants of both groups had IMCI knowledge and clinical skills required. Every evening regular meeting of the facilitators to collect the feedback from the observers, facilitators, and students have been organized. The overall comments on the IMCI training player were positive. Some pedagogical adaptation of the ICATT training player will however be needed. Detailed evaluation of the training course will be provided by the national Peruvian IMCI team.
