Capacity building and planning workshops for ICATT in European Region of WHO. 7-14 February 2009
21-Feb-2009

On request of WHO/EURO, two capacity building and planning workshops of 2.5 days each were conducted in Almaty, Kazakhstan and Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. These workshops were supported by WHO/EURO, CAH/HQ and the NFSD. The participants in both workshops came from the Ministries of Health of two countries, teaching institutions for health professionals involved in IMCI training and WHO regional and country staff.

The generic version of ICATT in English has been ready for use since May 2008. A Russian generic version was ready for use by the end of January 2009. Following the preparation of the Russian version European office for WHO decided to organize two capacity building workshop for the countries with active implementation of WHO/UNICEF IMCI strategy.
Both workshops were well received by the participants. After having been shown the background, the adaptation and the training possibilities of ICATT, participants, using individual computers, used the Russian version to go through a number of training units including the exercises. This was followed by a planning exercise in which a pre-service and an in-service training group discussed and developed a draft plan on how ICATT could assist in both the adaptation of the national guidelines and in the training of health workers in IMCI.
The recommendations for the respective Ministries of Health from both workshops were similar:
·         The Russian version of ICATT should be used to adapt the ICATT version for Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan with support from WHO
·          When a national ICATT version is ready for use, facilitator training should be conducted to train facilitators in ICATT and to finalize this version of ICATT
·         The Ministries of Health, using the draft plan developed in the ICATT planning workshop, should select a limited number of oblasts and teaching institutions to start using ICATT and to gain experience

The detailed reports from both workshops are in Russian and, if required, can be obtained from CPS/EURO.
