Indonesia is one of the three early application countries in which WHO will try out how ICATT can best be used for IMCI training in both pre- and in- service settings. The activities in these countries are, like the development of ICATT, supported by WHO in collaboration with the Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development (NFSD). The adaptation of ICATT for Indonesia in the national language Bahasa and in English started in December 2008 and is still ongoing. It was decided that Indonesia, after the adaptation has been completed, will field-test ICATT in a distance learning course.

The adaptation of ICATT for Indonesia is done by a national consultant who works with a team of IMCI facilitators. There is a plan that a NFSD consultant will visit Indonesia in the beginning of May 2009 for 4-5 days for capacity building purposes and to assist the ICATT team to finalize the Indonesian version. This version will be used for the tutor training which will precede the actual ICATT distance learning. The comments received during this tutor training will be used to adjust the Indonesian ICATT version before the actual distance learning will start.
Discussions were held with the Ministry of Health, staff of the WHO office in Indonesia, the national ICATT consultant and senior staff from the medical faculty of Gaja Mada University in Jogjakarta on how to plan for the distance learning. A draft course agenda prepared before the mission was used as guidance. In principle it was decided that the adaptation of the Indonesian ICATT would be ready by the end of May 2009. A tutor training of 3 days will be conducted in the first 2 weeks of June immediately followed by the distance learning course in 2 districts supported by NFSD and WHO in Central Java. In addition, the Ministry of Health is planning to fund a similar exercise in a number of districts in East Java and West Sumatra using the central and provincial budget. The courses will last for 2 months and will end before the end of August 2009. A follow up after training visit will be conducted 6-8 weeks after the end of each course.
